What is yoga?

The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj", which means "to yoke" the spirit and physical body together. Yoga has evolved over thousands of years to embrace a wide range of styles and disciplines.

Aeroflex recommends Yoga as part of your weekly fitness regime and Yoga can be modified to suit all levels of fitness. Yoga has been proven to lower blood pressure and increases strength and flexibility. Yoga energizes our bodies and calms our minds.

What to wear to yoga?

Proper alignment of yoga postures is important for many types of yoga. For this reason, choose clothes that are not too baggy and that help you and your yoga instructor make sure you have proper alignment.  Wear clothes that dry quickly, wick moisture away, and will keep you as comfortable as possible to get the most out of your yoga class. Fabrics with stretch will help you feel most comfortable as you move from pose to pose. Whatever you choose to wear to class, you should be able to move freely and feel good.

What are yoga props?

Yoga blocks and straps are great tools for beginner to seasoned yogis to help you better align yourself in a pose or get into "hard to reach" postures. Try sitting on a yoga block with your legs crossed to help open your hips up.  Aeroflex provides blocks and yoga straps for participants.

How to choose a yoga mat

Aeroflex has Yoga mats available for drop-in guests. You will want to purchase your own yoga mat should you decide to add Yoga to your regular fitness regime.

You're going to be spending a lot of time with your mat, so choose wisely. Yoga mats come in a variety of colours, sizes and thicknesses. For example, if you want to give your joints a little love, look for mats that are 6mm thick for extra cushioning.

Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing

Discover a new path to fitness via an ancient art form! After a proper warm up you will work on dance posture, alignment and isolation of the body's core muscle groups. We will introduce you to basic footwork, hip isolations, undulations and shimmies all to the musical notes of the oud and mizmar. Improve your flexibility and tone your body as you learn Middle Eastern dance steps and rhythms. No dance experience required.

Jodi Doesburg/Nuwayrah started her Middle Eastern dance career at Isis Dance Productions (Edmonton) in 2002 after accumulating considerable experience in musical theatre and martial arts. Although her discipline is now largely Raks Sharki, she also has a strong leaning towards Tribal Fusion style. Jodi continues to build upon her repertoire and has taken workshops with artists such as Beata & Horacio Cifuentes, Nath Keo, Amir Thaleb, Hadia, Sabura, Sonia, Petite Jamilla, Kami Liddle, Gypsy Caravan, Unmata, & Ariellah. When not teaching at Bedouin Beats Ltd, or for the City of Edmonton, and Aeroflex Fitness, Nuwayrah can be found performing at a variety of events with Edmonton's most diverse Middle Eastern dance troupe, Raq-a-Belly dance!
